Etica Battery to Install 15,000 Fire-Safe UPS Systems for Major Japan Telecom Provider

Etica Battery is installing 15,000 advanced UPS systems to support 5G telecom towers across Japan. Designed with patented anti-propagation technology, these fire-safe systems address growing concerns around lithium battery combustion while boosting network resilience. The project marks a major milestone in Etica’s global mission to deliver safer, more reliable backup power for critical infrastructure.

Powering Japan’s 5G Network with Safer Backup Systems

Etica Battery Inc. will supply and support the installation of 15,000 uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems to power 5G telecommunications towers across Japan. The nationwide project is part of a long-term infrastructure upgrade focused on fire safety, energy resilience, and disaster readiness.

Unlike conventional lithium-ion backup systems, the Etica UPS features a patented anti-propagation technology that prevents fire from spreading between cells during thermal runaway. The design uses slitted fireproof barriers that redirect flame and pressure away from adjacent cells, significantly reducing the risk of combustion. This same system has undergone successful testing and reflects Etica’s long-standing focus on practical, tested fire mitigation for energy storage.

The Japan Telecom project follows widespread reliability concerns in the country stemming from earlier deployments of low-cost batteries sourced from China and South Korea, which experienced thermal events in the field. Etica’s solution offers a higher-integrity alternative built on a decade of experience supporting telecom networks across Asia.

“Safety and uptime are non-negotiable in telecom,” said Gavin Wang, Chairman of Etica Battery. “This order shows what’s possible when fire prevention is designed into the cell architecture—not added as an afterthought.”

Each UPS module provides 48V DC output with approximately 2.5 kWh capacity, housed in an IP65-rated enclosure suitable for outdoor installation. The systems include intelligent BMS controls, RS485 communications, and integrated alarms for fault detection and remote monitoring.

U.S. Telecoms Face Similar Risks

As telecom infrastructure in the United States continues to densify for 5G and edge computing, Etica sees growing interest in fire-safe battery backup solutions for rooftop, pole-mount, and building-integrated sites. While the company is best known for its immersion-cooled energy storage systems, this UPS product line opens the door for safer, smaller-scale deployments in densely populated or disaster-prone areas.
